‘National Black Beauty Week,' August 21-27 | Carsha

Celebrate Black Beauty & Choose Black-Owned Brands For Your Store

National Black Beauty Week, 21-27 August “National Black Beauty Week represents a focused opportunity to redefine our perception and celebrate black beauty. instead of 'Othering', Black Beauty."

Sada Black Beauty Guide, the leading directory and news platform featuring black owned beauty brands, has declared the third full week of August as National Black Beauty Week. The opening ceremony will take place from August 21-27, 2022 and aims to help change the way the world sees, celebrates and experiences black beauty.

Black consumers - especially women - outperform other demographics for beauty products by nearly 20% and have a loyalty that drives market trends as loyal consumers willing to spend the max on their beauty fixes.

Loyal consumers are also the least considered and least visible, with a consequent lack of access to marketing, financing, resources, product choice and services. Additionally, black girls and women continue to experience racial discrimination based on their hair, facial features, and physical characteristics.

For those who are black, inequality extends to the business side as well. While Blacks make up 14% of the US population, only 2.5% of beauty brands are Black owned, only 5% of all beauty employees are Black, and only 2% of total advertising spend goes to Black publishers with diverse audiences.

“Black purchasing power and influence do not correlate with how we experience beauty and are perceived in the beauty industry, whether as consumers or brand owners,” said Stephenetta (isis) Harmon, Founder and EIC, Sadiaa.

"While a lot has happened in the last decade, there's still a lot to do," Harmon continued. “National Black Beauty Week represents a focused opportunity to (re)define our perception and celebration of black beauty. It is also a call to action for the beauty world to move toward actual justice and representation by normalizing black beauty rather than "alienating" it.
